    Hi!

Reading the regulations regarding the usage of computer programmes, my understanding is that they are allowed if you wrote them yourself.

brief description of their methods and a copy of any programmes they wrote when making the final decision.

However, are computer programmes which (by frequency analysis, for instance) automatically decode a text, but which were not written by a team member, allowed?

[EDIT, Harry: The idea of the competition is to show what you can do. If all you can do is use someone else’s programme then that kind of defeats the purpose, and we write the harder challenges in the later rounds to make that difficult, if not impossible to do! We try to police this with a light touch, but we do ask candidates for the main prizes to supply their working, so you can’t win this way. Hope that helps, Harry]
